Happy Graduation
This past weekend I was proud to watch my son, Daniel graduate from Yale University. We enjoyed the endless activities and the celebration of an important family milestone.
Perhaps knowing that it might be my last trip to the campus, I absolutely appreciated its beauty and incredible architecture. There are so many buildings of historic significance, and I purposely took the time to appreciate the fine details and design.
Here are some favorites:
Sterling Memorial Library
Linsley – Chittenden Hall
Battell Chappel
The graduation exercises took place on the lawn of Old Campus, and from this vantage point, I enjoyed looking at the beauty of Harkness Tower, constructed in the Collegiate Gothic style as many of the buildings on campus are. Baccalaureate services were in the beautiful Woolsey Hall, an ornately decorated hall that serves as Yale’s primary auditorium and performance space. My son was in the residential college, Ezra Stiles. Constructed in the early 1960’s, it is a modernist group of concrete buildings designed by alumnus Eero Saarinen.

The 22nd annual International Contemporary Furniture Fair is this weekend at the Jacob Javitz Center in NYC. The event will showcase the latest in contemporary design with over 550 exhibitors from all over the world. Exhibitors range from the outlandishly luxe to simple eco-friendly products. This is North America’s singular showcase for contemporary design and it’s a great indicator of upcoming trends as well as a forum for the best contemporary designers and artisans.
Here is a sneak peak of a few exhibitors, but I promise to share my favorites when I return.
Paris Anyone?
One of my favorite destinations is Paris. Paris seems to have it all – great museums, beautiful architecture, delicious food and great shopping. So I was understandably excited when I saw this contest that Design Sherpa is sponsoring called “What Inspires You”.
“What Inspires You” is offering anyone the chance to win a trip to Paris for 10 days to attend and write about Maison & Objet. You will even be given $10,000 in prize money! That should come in handy for a bit of shopping in Paris. You don’t have to be a design professional — you just need to be passionate about design. Is there something that inspires your design style? All you have to do is submit an image and 100 words of copy about your inspiration. A panel of celebrity judges including Tobi Fairley and Elaine Griffin will evaluate the entries and pick a winner.
The contest winner will be asked to chronicle their experience throughout the blogosphere with Design Sherpa posts. As the winner, your observations, your inspirations, your experiences will be shared through a vast network of passionate design professional and consumer communities. It is an opportunity of a lifetime.
Personally, I’m inspired by Paris – so I am definately going to submit an entry. What inspires you?
